  3. TRAVELLING IN THE
  4. UNITED KINGDOM

  6. Because of the physical
  7. geography
  8. of the country, there is
  9. quite
  10. a difference on ease of
  11. travel depending on which
  12. direction you are  going.
  13. East to west travel
  14. cannot obviously be as
  15. extensive as north to south!
  16. The United Kingdom supports
  17. an extensive and highly
  18. developed road and rail
  19. system (though some might
  20. argue that!) and travel
  21. is normally swift and trouble
  22. free.The extensive motorway
  23. system spans most of the
  24. country with roads such
  25. as the six-lane M1
  26. connecting Leeds to London and
  27. bringing the connection
  28. time between south and north down
  29. dramatically.
  30. The rail system is good though
  31. occassionally can be frustrating
  32. with train delays in some regions
  33. (the Southern region is notorious
  34. for this).The domestic air system
  35. is equally very well developed
  36. and is supported by a number of
  37. domestic airlines as well as
  38. British Airways the international
  39. carrier of the UK.
  40. Domestic airlines include:
  41. British Midland
  42. Air UK
  43. Logan Air
  44. Manx Air
  45. British European Airways
  46. Ryan Air
  47. and others.
  48. The Uk is connected to the
  49. mainland of Europe by a busy
  50. ferry network and will soon
  51. be even more firmly linked
  52. - for better or worse-
  53. by the Channel tunnel
  54. (or Chunnel!).This new
  55. structure will be
  56. essentially a rail link
  57. with France and the
  58. rest of Europe.
  59. Major existing Ferry
  60. companies are Sealink
  61. and P&O and the major
  62. port to port routes are
  63. Dover to Calais and
  64. Hull to Rotterdam.
  65.  
  66. Over the last three
  67. decades, with the
  68. unfortunate decline
  69. in manufacturing and
  70. capital industry in
  71. the UK, the rise of
  72. service industries has
  73. been the major trend in
  74. the economy, and of these
  75. the Travel and Tourism
  76. industry is a major
  77. player. Major theme
  78. parks now dot the country
  79. though not on the scale
  80. of Euro Disney in France.

  87. the parks,theatreland,
  88. West End,the Thames Embank-
  89. ment,British Museum,

  94. Edinburgh Castle/Blackpool
  95. /Humber Bridge/the Lake
  96. District/the Scottish
  97. Highlands/Snowdonia national

  101. and more attuned to coping
  102. with a sophisticated
  103. incoming tourist market
  104. and most towns and cities
  105. have very well run tourist
  106. information centres.These
  107. are especially useful for
  108. locating short term and
  109. short notice cheap accom-
  110. odation and are highly
  111. recommended to anyone
  112. touring the UK.
